System-Wide Dynamic Power Management for Multimedia Portable Devices

چکیده
Energy reduction is critical to increase the mobility and battery life for today’s pervasive computing systems. At the same time, energy reduction must be subject to the realtime constraints and quality of service (QoS) requirements for multimedia applications running on these systems. This paper presents a novel run-time scheduling approach to reduce the system-wide energy consumption for such systems. In this paper, the multimedia applications are modeled using a popular weakly hard real-time model, i.e., the (m,k)-model. Our experimental results show that, by judiciously scheduling the real-time tasks and shutting down the processor and/or peripheral devices, our approach can lead to significant energy savings while guaranteeing the (m,k)−firm deadlines at the same time.

Resource management, and especially power management, is a key aspect for the success of modern battery supplied multimedia devices. This class of devices are usually based on SoCs with a wide range of heterogeneous subsystems, competing for shared resources while offering several power control mechanisms. Many of these mechanisms require suitable software support to be exploited effectively. U...
متن کاملPower Management in Portable Systems Using MAX II CPLDs
Introduction Portable system designers are concerned with minimizing the static and dynamic current draw of all components within a battery-powered system. This application note highlights the very low static and dynamic power capabilities of MAX® II CPLDs. It also reviews circuit design techniques that allow MAX II devices to achieve zero stand-by current. In addition, MAX II devices can be us...
